Newsletter of the Western Aquatic Plant Management Society WAPMS NEWS December 2000 Message from the President As the holidays are approaching and we reach the end of another calendar year, it is always a great time to review our recent accomplishments and progress against goals. Most of us involved in the war on weeds know we still have a few skirmishes to wage, and will face even more threats coming in from foreign borders. One way to get support in waging this war on weeds is to arm yourselves with the best and most current information possible. You will find that by attending our upcoming annual WAPMS meeting in Las Vegas, NV on March 29 & 30, 2001. Vice-President and Program Chair, Mike Mizumoto, has done a great job in putting together a solid program packed with relevant topics to help us win our aquatic weed battles. One of the most time-tested ways to win wars is to have an informed and able army. That means: invite colleagues, friends, students, and co-workers that would benefit from the information presented at this conference. Mike has expanded our pool of sponsors who will also have information available, and answer the tough question on halting the spread of invasive and noxious aquatic weeds. So, sign-up now to attend. Remember, Circus~Circus is a great place to relax and have fun for you, your spouse, and family, too. I look forward to seeing you in Vegas, and please introduce me to the new people you will be bringing along with you. Sincerely, Ron P. Crockett WAPMS Meeting 2001 The 2001 meeting is shaping up fantastic! Thanks in large part to the sponsors and speakers. All of our corporate sponsors have agreed to continue sponsoring the Chapter. The speakers have been equally obliging as you can see from the tentative program schedule (see below). My undying gratitude to all of you. There are still a few "slots" open for presentations, so it isn’t too late to submit an abstract! Here are a few reminders and information for you:

Scholarship for Work on Aquatic Plants The Western Aquatic Plant Management Society (WAPMS) announces a
scholarship to support students in their pursuit of a degree in aquatic
sciences. New $3 million IFAFS Grant to ARS and cooperators USDA-ARS was awarded a new $3,000,000. grant from the USDA-IFAFS to work on Biologically-base control for the area-wide management of exotic and invasive weeds. This Consortium grant was coordinated by the USDA Exotic and Invasive Weeds Research Unit of the Western Regional Research Center in Albany, CA. The $3.0 million will be used over 4 years to research control methods for three invasive weed species, saltcedar, giant reed and yellow starthistle. Although USDA-ARS is the lead institution, several other groups are involved in the Consortium effort. Three of the Principal Investigators are from ARS (Ray Carruthers (lead PI), Albany, CA; Dave Spencer, Davis, CA; and Jack DeLoach, Temple, TX), two from Univ. of Calif. Berkeley (Carla D'Antonio and Tom Dudley), one from Texas A&M Univ. (Allen Knutson), and one from the Univ. of Wyoming (Dave Kazmer). Several additional federal, state and private groups are also involved as collaborators, many of whom will participate in the implementation aspects of the project. The proposal supports a variety of activities aimed at invasive weed management and it allows ARS to maintain leadership in this program area. The program will focus research in California/Nevada, Texas/New Mexico and Colorado/Wyoming research sites, and implementation activities will be conducted by project cooperators in several western states. An organizational planning meeting will be held in Albany, CA later this winter to initiate this project. The project will focus on three major tasks: 1) Development of new benefit/ risk evaluation methods for biological control agents used to combat invasive plant species in sensitive environments; 2) Area-wide and ecosystem level research on the impact of target weeds and optimizing the effects that biological and other integrated methods of control have on beneficial flora, fauna and physical aspects of the environment; and 3) Area-wide assessments of invasive species impact, implementation of biological control release and evaluation, natural enemies impact assessment, and evaluation of other weed control methods. This effort uses a team-approach that includes scientists, land managers, economists, and risk assessors from state, federal and private groups. The Consortium will provide expertise across disciplines, and methodologies from basic research to area-wide implementation and evaluation. This grant is truly an Inter-Departmental effort that includes cooperation with the Dept. of Interior and other USDA Agencies (APHIS and ORACBA). Overall, this project will develop control options for invasive plants that will be implemented and evaluated on private, government, and Native American lands. Raymond I. Carruthers, Research Leader Graduate Assistantship Announcement A graduate assistantship in the area of aquatic plant management and ecology is being offered jointly by The Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Foundation (AERF), a non-profit applied research and education organization, and The Aquatic Plant Management Society (APMS). Co-sponsors of this academic award will include some, if not all, of the six APMS regional chapters. Objective: To provide a stipend for a full-time graduate student to conduct research in the areas involving aquatic herbicides or algicides (used alone or in combination with other management approaches) or in aquatic ecology related to the management of regionally or nationally-recognized nuisance vegetation. Applicant Eligibility: Solicitation for proposals is open to any full-time faculty member and/or graduate student of an accredited U.S. academic institution. A faculty sponsor must be identified if applicant is a graduate student. Amount: $40,000.00 Duration: Two years. Proposal Deadline: Applications must be postmarked no later than 1 April 2001.
